Shear pumps are crucial equipment in drilling fluid circulation systems for preparing drilling mud. They are primarily used to treat polymers and clay in the drilling fluid, improving its performance. The impeller structure of the shear pump crushes and disperses chemical particles, clay, and other solid phases in the fluid flow, resulting in broken-up and uniformly distributed solids. Mud shear pumps can reduce polymers by more than 15% and bentonite by more than 30%. They also reduce mud cake and fluid loss, improve gel strength, and more effectively protect the wellbore and prevent oil reservoir contamination. Mud shear pumps are often used in conjunction with jet funnels. Currently, mud shear mixing devices are widely used in subway tunnel boring machine (TBM) construction.
